I started using what I call Glowstick Twisters over 20 years ago and fire twisters
12 years Ago. I started using fire mainly to keep my hands warm Raynauds / Raynard’s
disease When training outside in the winter. The main reason I started using Twisters
was to try to Keep my joints, and muscles, supple. As a child I was told to stop
doing whatever sport I Was doing at the time, also not to do any more sports. The
reason I was stopped all Through my childhood I was constantly told I would be in
a wheelchair by the time I was Twenty-six, and I would not be able to use my Right
arm and hand, except as a hook with A clumsy pair of pincers, and doing sports would
only make my problems worse. The Reason for this, I was born Physically Disabled.
The right hand side of my body is smaller Than the left, and I have about 70 percent
of my fingers on my right hand missing. Also I have had constant pains in my legs
all my life. Most doctors say it is Phocomila Caused by Thalidomide except the one
who deals with compensation. I do not receive Any money for my disabilities. I saw
my cousin (IAN) doing (20+ years ago) what he Called Nunchaku he saw these as a
form of offensive / defensive tool. I saw them as a Therapeutic aid, and a way of
keeping my joints and muscles supple. Ian showed me About six basic moves With Nunchaku,
The rest I taught myself through watching my Cousin, unlike him though I used these
for the body movements that can be achieved, Through trial and error, and many bruises
and cuts. It was only after using them for Several years and becoming more proficient
I found that I could do them for some time as The pains in my legs did not get any
more painful even when I tried dancing with only Realised this then because I was
never allowed to anything for very long, as the doctors Had always blamed sports
/ exercise for making the pains and problems was only when I Was older and they could
not tell me what to started using Glowstick Twisters, to Dance Music so far they
have helped with my breathing, hand eye co-ordination, stamina, Flexibility, more
important to me being able to use right arm, especially my right hand and Wrist and
building the muscles and strength back into it. My left hand is five years ahead
Of my right using them, as this is how long it took before I tried doing anything
complicated With my right hand, then another three years before using two sets of
Twisters. I think the Only move I cannot do with my right hand that I can do with
my left is Juggling the Twisters through what is left of my fingers. At the moment.
Even though I am disabled I Have always counted my self very fortunate as I count
my disability minor compared to Other Disabled people especially most of the other
Thalidomide victims.
